A true story that crossed two worlds.
Pequeña Fuegia (Little Fuegia) is a Spanish-language illustrated children's book based on the true story of Fuegia Basket.
At the end of the world in Tierra del Fuego, at the southern tip of South America, a young girl named Yokcushlu lived by the sea with her family. She spent her days navigating in canoes, fishing, and learning from her community, surrounded by mountains, forests, and cold waters. She was nine years old when her life changed forever.
Taken aboard an English ship, she began an extraordinary journey and adventure across the ocean toward a completely unfamiliar world. Far from her home, she encountered new languages, customs, and ways of life that challenged everything she had known.
This is the story of Fuegia Basket, a girl from the Yagán (Yámana) people of Tierra del Fuego who, in the nineteenth century, was taken to England by Captain Robert FitzRoy. During her time there, she experienced life in a society very different from her own and even met Queen Adelaide. On the return voyage to South America, she traveled aboard the Beagle alongside the young naturalist Charles Darwin.
As her journey continued, Fuegia navigated between cultures, adapting to new environments while holding on to her identity. Her story reflects the complexity of cultural encounters during a time of exploration and change.
Pequeña Fuegia (Little Fuegia) brings this true historical story to life through clear, sensitive storytelling and evocative illustrations. It introduces young readers to an important chapter of history while encouraging empathy, curiosity, and reflection.
Ideal for reading at home or in the classroom, this book offers a meaningful way to explore Indigenous cultures, South American history, and the experiences of children in different parts of the world.
A story of Indigenous cultures, identity, belonging, and adventure-perfect for readers who are curious about history, diversity, and the connections between worlds.
