Ohne Polybios wäre keine Darstellung der Geschichte der Mittelmeerwelt vom 3. und 2. Jh. v.Chr. auf diesem Niveau möglich. Nahezu die gesamte historiographische Überlieferung geht - soweit zuverlässig - irgendwie auf Polybios zurück. Man kommt an einer Beschäftigung mit diesem Autor, der mit den Lebensdaten 200-122 v.Chr. viele Ereignisse, über die er schreibt, miterlebt hat, nicht vorbei. Darüber hinaus gibt der Politiker und Historiker auch Einblick in seine "Werkstatt", so dass eine differenzierte Beschäftigung mit seinen historiographischen Prinzipien möglich ist. Laufend problematisiert er den historischen Wert der Quellen. Unabhängig Dokumente bestätigen seinen Bericht. So nimmt es nicht wunder, dass Polybios' Werk eine große Nachwirkung hat. Bis heute darf es als Lehrbuch für politisch Handelnde und Interessierte gelten.
