A chance meeting between Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, and Cockney flower seller Eliza Doolittle leads to a bet that he can teach her how to speak proper English. Ever since its wildly popular first production in 1913, Pygmalion has amused and entertained audiences the world over and has become one of the most adapted plays of all time. In 1938 Shaw provided the screenplay for a filmed version of Pygmalion for which he received an Academy Award.
