Raising Decent Humans is a candid, funny, and deeply thoughtful book about raising children without making perfection the goal.

Kathryn Martin begins with five deceptively simple values she wants her children to carry into adulthood: be safe, be kind, be helpful, be respectful, and be honest. From there, she explores what those words actually mean in real life-when children push boundaries, make mistakes, tell uncomfortable truths, hurt people, get hurt themselves, challenge authority, need help, or begin making choices their parents can no longer control.

At its heart, the book rejects the idea that successful parenting produces perfectly behaved children. Obedience is not the same as respect. Kindness is not self-sacrifice. Helping is not rescuing. Protecting children is not controlling them. An apology is not repair unless something changes. And failure is not evidence that something is wrong with a child-or a parent. It is part of learning what to do next.

Woven throughout the book are lessons passed down from Kathryn's mother, including two ideas that become touchstones for her own parenting: "Only perfect practice makes perfect," and the reminder to hold your children with an open hand, because it hurts when God has to pry your fingers off them. As Kathryn grows into those words, the book becomes as much about the parent's growth as the child's.

With humor, vulnerability, and plenty of well, that parenting moment went spectacularly wrong honesty, Kathryn examines the uncomfortable truth that children learn far more from watching us live than from listening to our lectures. They see how we handle anger, boundaries, honesty, mistakes, power, apologies, and letting go. Raising decent humans therefore requires parents to keep practicing those same things themselves.

Ultimately, Raising Decent Humans is not a manual for getting parenting right. It is a book about building a compass-for our children and for ourselves-so that when we inevitably get something wrong, we know how to find our way back.

Because the goal was never perfect children raised by perfect parents.

The goal is humans who know what to do when they discover they aren't perfect-and who have the courage to keep practicing.
