En 1880, un jeune Lorrain de Bar-le-Duc s'inscrivait au barreau de Paris avec l'ambition de ses vingt ans : devenir un grand avocat, un écrivain célèbre et peut-être un jour diriger la France. Si la vie publique a contrarié sa vocation littéraire, son métier a modelé à tel point sa personnalité que Poincaré est apparu comme l'exemple achevé de la " République des avocats ". Son parcours commence dans le sillage de Gambetta, Ferry et autres grands anciens. Ministre à trente-trois ans, il est l'un des espoirs du nouveau régime, mais son ascension marque le pas après l'affaire Dreyfus qu'il aurait pu contribuer à dénouer. En 1913, à cinquante-deux ans, il devient président du Conseil puis président de la République l'année suivante, fonction qu'il occupera pendant toute la durée de la guerre, prenant une part notable à la victoire. Après son départ de l'Élysée, il réussit un retour unique dans l'histoire politique française : en janvier 1922, il revient une première fois aux affaires pour deux ans ; en juillet 1926, il est appelé au chevet de la monnaie malade, et la confiance qu'il inspire suffit à sauver le franc pour de longues années. Au-delà des passions contradictoires, des légendes dorées qui l'ont entouré comme de la légende noire qui l'a poursuivi, quel a été le vrai Raymond Poincaré ? Quelle place a-t-il tenue et conserve-t-il dans l'Histoire ? Des documents peu connus ou inédits ainsi qu'un regard neuf porté sur la IIIe République permettent à François Roth de dresser le portrait profondément renouvelé de l'un des grands hommes d'État français du XXe siècle. Né en 1936, professeur d'histoire contemporaine à l'université de Nancy-2, François Roth travaille sur l'histoire politique française et européenne des XIXe et XXe siècles ainsi que sur les relations franco-allemandes. Il a publié, entre autres, La Lorraine annexée, 1870-1918 ; La Guerre de 70 (Fayard, 1990) ; L'Allemagne de 1815 à 1918 et Les Modérés dans la République, 1870-1965.
