There is an increased interest in the geography of Eastern European countries, which recently accessed (or accessing in the near future) the European Union. The traditional cooperation between the countries of the Carpatho-Balkan-Dinaric region, however, loosened after the political changes in the 1990s. The Carpatho-Balkanic Geomorphological Commission and the IAG/AIG Carpatho-Balkan-Dinaric Regional Working Group strongly promote resumed contacts between researchers and the exchange of their research experience. In 2008 at the Regional Geomorphological Conference in Bra ov, Romania, the final structure of a joint geomorphological monograph was decided. Springing from the activities of both groups, the monograph highlights current knowledge on recent landform evolution in the region based on investigations in the recent past and at present applying both traditional and novel techniques. It constitutes an overview of studies of exogenic geomorphic processes from the viewpoint of the history of their investigation, their spatio-temporal distribution, as well as the geomorphic effect in countries situated in this area. Each national chapter (on Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Macedonia) treats geomorphic processes in the order of their significance in shaping the topography of the country in question. The volume also indicates the operation of geomorphic processes as natural hazards currently influencing human land use and economic activities. The contributions also shed light on future processes operating under the conditions of predictable climate change. There is an increased interest in the geography of Eastern European countries, which recently accessed (or accessing in the near future) the European Union.
