Rigged for Failure is a science fiction romantic comedy set in Chicago about a young man who discovers that knowing what happens next cannot protect him from the consequences of his choices.
Jacob Nash, a 23-year-old banquet server and talented poker player, feels that life is stacked against him. He overthinks everything, fears failure, and struggles to take chances without knowing how they will turn out. When a mix-up involving takeout orders introduces him to aspiring photographer Rachel Bennett, their awkward encounter sparks a promising connection.
Meanwhile, Jacob's roommate, Eric Brooks, invents a watch that predicts fragments of nearby events up to sixty seconds into the future. Its predictions are incomplete, sometimes misleading, and capable of changing when someone reacts to them. Repeated use also causes dangerous overheating.
Jacob initially agrees to help Eric test the device, but soon starts using it to cheat at poker and anticipate moments during his dates with Rachel. Winning money gives him confidence, while predicting conversations seems like a way to avoid embarrassment. Instead, his dependence on the watch creates increasingly ridiculous misunderstandings and prevents him from listening to the woman he hopes to impress.
As their relationship develops, Rachel faces her own challenges: building a photography career, charging fairly for her work, and learning to express her needs without apologizing for them. Eric, haunted by an earlier unfinished invention, must decide what responsible progress looks like-and whether he can continue trusting his friend.
Jacob's determination to win eventually overwhelms his promises. After Eric takes the watch back, Jacob steals it and enters a $500 poker game during a reception Rachel is photographing. He risks money he could have used to repay the friends he previously cheated. When the overheating watch announces its diagnostic warning aloud, his deception unravels in front of everyone.
Forced to admit how he used the device, Jacob loses his friends' trust, damages his relationship with Eric, and leaves Rachel questioning how much of their connection was honest. Repairing those relationships requires repayment, accountability, patience, and respect for other people's boundaries.
The ending offers a modest, hopeful second chance. Jacob returns to a small poker game, loses a little money, and enjoys himself. Rachel agrees to dinner without promising forgiveness or a future together. For once, Jacob accepts that he cannot know what comes next.
At its heart, the screenplay is about learning to live with uncertainty: love and friendship depend on honesty, not on finding a way to guarantee that you win.
