In Ruanda wurden 1994 mindestens 800 000 Menschen ermordet. Im vorliegenden Essay stellt sich Robert Stockhammer den Aporien der Genozidbeschreibung. Diese rühren aus der Einsicht, daß es ebenso problematisch ist, den ruandischen Völkermord mit der Shoah zu vergleichen, wie es problematisch ist, solche Vergleiche kategorisch auszuschließen. Statt dessen lotet er am Beispiel dieses "anderen" Genozids den Vergleichs'druck' aus, der auf dem Schreiben über Völkermorde lastet. Dafür untersucht er Bücher, die Afrikaner und Europäer seither darüber geschrieben haben, darunter viele literarische Texte, jedoch auch Zeugnisse von Überlebenden und Reportagen. Neben dem Aufweis vieler bis in die deutsche Kolonialzeit zurückreichender Stereotypen liefert Stockhammer wichtige Reflexionen zur Beschreibbarkeit des Unbeschreibbaren.
