Die "Schachnovelle" ist Stefan Zweigs letztes Werk. Vier Abschriften ließ er von seiner Frau Lotte herstellen und versendete sie an verschiedene Verleger, bevor beide zusammen 1942 im brasilianischen Petropolis den Freitod wählten. Nach dem Krieg entwickelte sich die Erzählung zum Klassiker. Der Herausgeber Klemens Renoldner vom Stefan Zweig Centre in Salzburg verglich die drei noch erhaltenen Typoskripte und erstellte auf diese Weise zum ersten Mal einen verlässlichen Text. Ein genauer Zeilenkommentar sowie ein informiertes Nachwort erschließen dieses so wichtige Dokument in angemessener Weise.
