Emerging from the milieu of expatriate American artists in postwar Paris, painter Shirley Jaffe forged a distinctive pictorial language that has gained international recognition. In the first monograph to cover her career, New York critic Raphael Rubinstein traces Jaffe's development as a painter who rejected gestural abstraction in favor of a more deliberative approach emphasizing shape and color. Inspired by the urban textures of Paris and New York, Jaffe continues to dazzle viewers with complex, exuberant paintings that celebrate visual multiplicity and the poetics of precision.
