Three men confessed to the same murder. All three used her words.

Aaron Pike walks into a police station at four in the morning and describes a killing in exact, unhurried detail. So does a retired schoolteacher in another county. So does a man who was in a hospital bed at the time.

None of them could have been in that room. All three describe the victim's last minute in language taken, sentence by sentence, from a recording only forensic audio analyst Nora Vale has heard.

Nora built her career proving that a voice can be assembled. Now someone is assembling the people who speak - feeding a memory into strangers until they believe it is their own, then letting them walk into a station and hand it back.

The confessions are false. The murder is not. And the only way to find who wrote the sentence is to sit in the room where it was taught, and let it be taught to her.

A confession is only evidence of who was listening.
