Johann Friedrich Eschscholtz (1793-1831) studierte Medizin an der Universität Dorpat (heute Tartu in Estland). Von 1815 bis 1818 nahm er als Schiffsarzt und naturwissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Rurik-Expedition zur Erforschung der Nordwestpassage teil, die von Otto von Kotzebue geleitet und von dem Schriftsteller und Naturforscher Adelbert von Chamisso begleitet wurde. Eschscholtz publizierte seine wissenschaftlichen Beobachtungen dieser Reise im dritten Band von Kotzebues Entdeckungsreise in die Südsee und Beringstraße (Weimar 1821). Nach Dorpat zurückgekehrt wurde Eschscholtz zum außerordentlichen Professor der Anatomie und zum Direktor des zoologischen Kabinetts berufen. 1823 schloss er sich erneut Kotzebue an, der auf der Predprijatije zu einer weiteren Weltreise aufbrach, die bis 1828 dauerte. Zu Eschscholtz Publikationen zählen: "Ideen zur Aneinanderreihung der rückgrätigen Tiere" (1819), "Entomographien" (1824) und "System der Acalephen" (1829).
