I was born twice.
The first time, in a cold stone chamber at Hedingham, on an April day my mother cried out longer than was quite decent for a countess. The second time, much later, in a room that smelled of ink and tallow.
So begins the testament of Edward de Vere, seventeenth Earl of Oxford - speaking now from a place where the years are no longer counted, looking back on the life he was given and the name he was not.
He inherited the oldest earldom in England, a coat of arms bearing a lion with a broken spear, and a debt he never outran. Raised in William Cecil's household, married into the most powerful family in the realm, sent to Venice and Padua to be polished into a courtier, he failed at all three - and in failing, he wrote.
It began with a boy from Warwickshire who could not read the parts he was given. It ended in a pact: one man would hold the pen, the other would hold the name. Between those two moments lie the fall of a great house, the Dark Lady, a trial for murder, and a crown that changed hands in winter.
What he could not give his plays was a signature. What he gave them instead was Shakespeare.
Written in the first person by a voice that knows how a life looks once it is over, The Borrowed Name is at once an Elizabethan chronicle and something quieter: a meditation on what a name is worth, why we believe we are separate, and what remains when everything the world can take has been taken.
Time is the last illusion - and history is written by whoever is allowed to hold the pen.
