"They're just a different generation."

Six words in a corridor, and the argument is over. Nobody is a villain. Nobody has to be accused. It sounds like progress - and it is the second-best wrong answer at work.

The Generation Excuse takes the most sophisticated wrong answer in working life and builds it at full strength before taking it apart.

The complaint about the young is twenty-four centuries old, worded almost identically throughout, and has never once been withdrawn. The most-quoted piece of evidence for it is a sentence Socrates did not write - it was composed in 1907 by a Cambridge graduate student summarising a passage of Plato that says something close to the opposite.

The studies that appear to show generational differences mostly cannot mean what they appear to mean, for a reason that is arithmetic rather than opinion. A National Academies committee reviewing the field concluded that the findings may simply reflect people ageing and the work changing.

And the one measure anybody has actually kept for forty years settles the most common claim of all. Median tenure for American workers aged 25 to 34 was 2.8 years in 1996. In 2024 it was 2.7.

What replaces it is a variable that predicts: not when someone was born, but what they are currently carrying. Across thirty thousand workers in sixteen countries, the ranking of what people want from a job is the same at every age.

Then the book removes age from the conflict entirely - and finds the fight still standing.

One Level Down is one argument in twelve numbered parts. Almost everything that goes wrong at work is diagnosed at the wrong level: we reach for character when the cause is incentive, for generation when the cause is status, for willpower when the cause is design. Each volume teaches one complete, usable lens - then ends on a real case its own lens cannot explain. That case is the next volume.
