At sixteen, Alex Bennett and Lucy Whitaker made a promise: one day, they would work a harvest in Burgundy together.

Then Lucy returned to California, and the life they imagined slipped quietly out of reach.

Years later, Alex arrives in San Francisco carrying the remains of a biotechnology company, a damaged reputation and a body he no longer entirely trusts.
