Taking India's Kumaon Himalaya as an example, this book examines how a marginalized community, the Bhotiyas, has substantially influenced the manner in which this high mountain border region gained presence and reconfigured its shape as an imperial environment under British colonial rule. The sealing of the border between India and China in 1962 had far-reaching effects on resident communities on both sides.
