May 8. What a glorious day. A calm man lies on the grass of his old family house beside the river and waves to a beautiful white ship from Brazil. He does not know what he has just invited into his life. This is a graded reader to learn English through easy English reading - an illustrated comic book for adult ESL and EFL learners at CEFR A2+/B1 level, built to grow your vocabulary with one of the most famous horror stories ever written, by Guy de Maupassant (1887).
The story is his diary. A few days after the ship, he has a slight fever and feels sad without any reason. At night he dreams that someone is kneeling on his chest. One night he wakes up at two in the morning, burning with thirst - and his water bottle is empty, although the door is locked and the key is under his pillow. He tests himself like a scientist, with white cloth and pencil dust. The bottles are drained again, but the cloth stays clean. It was not him. In Paris, a doctor shows him how one mind can control another. Back home, in the middle of a sunny afternoon, a red rose rises into the air in front of his eyes. Something invisible is living under his roof. It drinks, it touches, it reads over his shoulder - and every day it grows stronger. How can a man fight a creature he cannot see?
This is a faithful adaptation of a public domain classic, retold in clear Level 3 English with original comic-book art. The white ship, the empty bottle, the floating rose and the famous mirror scene are all here.
WHY THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT
This is not a wall of hard text. Every page pairs a few clear sentences with a full-page picture, so you see the image and know the word. The diary form uses the past simple, the past continuous, the present perfect and the past perfect in a natural way, with a rich but controlled vocabulary.
A horror story is a powerful way to read in English. The suspense pulls you from page to page, and the pictures show you every object of the period, from the river barges to the wardrobe mirror. Important words - invisible, creature, mirror, fear, will, water - return with the story until they are truly yours.
The story speaks to adults: a disturbing and intelligent tale about fear, about the limits of our senses and about losing control of your own mind.
