What happens when science - which ought to be the free pursuit of truth - turns into a closed, dogmatic system? This is no ordinary question. It is the question that drives this book. And the answer, as you'll see, is unsettling.
It all began under a fig tree. There, as a child, the author wondered where it all came from - the sky, the stars, life, herself. That question followed her for decades, through journalism school, through the classroom as an art teacher, through countless readings and late-night study sessions. Until she noticed something disturbing: the science that was supposed to answer that question wasn't really interested in all possible answers. There was an unspoken rule, an invisible boundary, a line that could not be crossed.
That boundary has a name: methodological naturalism. It is the philosophical principle stating that, to be considered scientific, an explanation may only invoke natural causes - no design, no purpose, no intelligence. Only matter and chance. It seems reasonable at first glance, but the author raises an uncomfortable question: what if this rule amounts to a rigged game? What if it excludes hypotheses not because the evidence has refuted them, but because the adopted philosophy doesn't even allow them to be considered?
Chapter after chapter, Neide Fischer gathers real scientific discoveries that the prevailing model struggles to explain. The James Webb telescope has found massive, mature galaxies in a universe that, according to the Big Bang model, should be far too young to have them. In the fossil record, the Cambrian explosion reveals all major animal groups appearing suddenly, with no clear ancestors in earlier layers. And then there is the irreducible complexity of systems like the bacterial flagellum and the blood-clotting cascade - systems that need all their parts working simultaneously to be of any use. How could natural selection build something that only works when it's complete?
But the book is not just about evidence. It is also about people. The author devotes entire chapters to showing how the academic, publishing, and media systems treat those who dare to question the consensus. One of the most striking chapters draws a historical parallel between the medieval Inquisition and modern academia. Back then, truth was defined by the Church; those who disagreed went to the stake. Today, truth is defined by scientific consensus; those who disagree go to a paper pyre - they lose their jobs, their reputations, their funding. The modern inquisitor doesn't wear a cassock. He wears a white lab coat.
The book does not limit itself to criticism. In the final chapter, the author proposes a utopia: what if the science of origins were truly free? What if all hypotheses - including intelligent design - could compete on equal footing, without a prior philosophical rule excluding some of them? She does not impose answers. She does not demand that the reader believe in God, intelligent design, or anything specific. What she asks is something simpler and, at the same time, more difficult: that the search for truth be, in fact, free.
This is a book for those who have looked up at a starry sky and wondered what is really going on here. For those who suspect that not everything fits so neatly into the official narrative. For those who believe science should be the freest of human activities - not a closed club with invisible rules. It is not a religious book - the author makes that clear from the first page. It is a book about courage: the courage to ask forbidden questions, to follow the evidence wherever it leads, to publish a book that will make many people uncomfortable. Dogma in a Lab Coat is a gut punch. An invitation to think outside the box - and to ask yourself who built that box in the first place.
