John Watts grew up just outside the village of Haswell in County Durham, at Pesspool Junction, a small rail crossing steeped in the challenges of post war Britain. From these humble beginnings, he built a life defined by courage, resilience and achievement.

A Royal Marine Commando, John became a national champion, Olympic athlete, and British record holder in the discus event. After leaving the Marines he pursued university studies to broaden his career and went on to serve as a director of services in local government.

Even in retirement, his athletic ambitions never waned. John became a veterans' World and European champion and collected over 20 National titles. His story offers candid reflections on Britain's post-war years and a life full of adventure, triumph and the unyielding spirit of determination.
