Most organizations are not failing. They are succeeding at the wrong objective.

In The Open Door, Matt Lettelleir argues that the thing keeping people coming back, to a restaurant, a hospital, a permit office, or a city, is not efficiency. It is the experience of being genuinely received.

Drawing on a life shaped by hospitality, hotels operated by his maternal grandfather in St. Petersburg, his paternal grandfather's bakery, his dad's resorts built on the principle that people deserve to feel at home, and one afternoon in Bloomington, Indiana, when a bar owner named Rags noticed a grieving stranger and did something about it, Lettelleir traces genuine welcome from its oldest roots to its largest scale.

The book moves through three movements. The Roots goes back before the industry, to the ancient traditions that made hospitality a sacred obligation and to the personal histories that taught the author what welcome feels like before he had a word for it. Scale follows the same principle into healthcare, leadership, design, and economics, showing how any organization that serves people can build a culture of genuine hospitality deliberately. The City extends the argument to its largest scale, arguing that the restaurant owner and the mayor are doing the same work, and that the welcoming cities winning the competition for residents and investment are the ones that govern as hosts.

The All-In Hospitality Framework distills the argument into five pillars: Radical Welcome, Generosity Beyond Expectation, Personal Connection, Community Creation, and Stewardship of Place. Whether the door in question belongs to a restaurant, a hospital room, a permit office, or a city, the same question is waiting on the other side of it.

Am I welcome here?

The Open Door is for hospitality industry leadership who want language for what they already practice, and for civic leaders who sense that a city's most important product is the experience of being in it.

Walk through the door.
