Published in Lisbon in 1875, Camilo Castelo Branco's The Regicide's Daughter is
a historical romance of vengeance, inherited disgrace, political violence, and
forgiveness set against the turbulent world of seventeenth-century Portugal.

Angela, the daughter of Domingos Leite Pereira, grows up under the shadow of a
father condemned as a regicide and a mother marked by scandal, exile, and war.
Around her, the old wounds of the Restoration era remain alive: a grandfather
demands justice for his executed son; a wealthy New Christian attempts to repair
a tragedy he believes he helped set in motion; and Maria Isabel, separated from
her daughter by disgrace and circumstance, searches for a path back to her.

Camilo combines family tragedy with corrosive satire of royal power, social
hypocrisy, inherited honor, religious persecution, and the machinery of public
judgment. The result is a novel in which revenge is only the beginning of the
moral reckoning, and in which the final question is whether love can resist the
identities imposed by law, rumor, and history.

preserving its historical register, authorial irony, letters, documentary
passages, and the unusual chapter numbering of the 1875 printing.
