Quantum gravity is the scientific effort to unite the two most successful descriptions of nature ever created. General relativity explains gravity, black holes, planets, galaxies, and the expanding universe by showing that mass and energy curve spacetime. Quantum mechanics explains atoms, particles, radiation, uncertainty, and the strange microscopic behavior that makes modern electronics possible. Each theory is remarkably accurate. The problem is that they do not fully agree when both must operate at the same time.
That disagreement matters most in the universe's most extreme places: inside black holes, during the earliest moments after the Big Bang, and perhaps at the smallest possible scale of space and time. There, Einstein's smooth, continuous spacetime may need to become quantum, grainy, uncertain, and occasionally as bewildering as a squirrel trying to operate a leaf blower.
