THE SINKHOLE

When Lucille Wainwright regains consciousness in a Sydney hospital, she is horrified to find she has lost fifty-nine years of memory. She is no longer a pretty, vibrant teenager but an elderly woman in her mid-seventies. To regain her memory, Lucille undergoes hypnosis. This takes her back to nineteen sixty-five. She is ecstatic to be reunited with her family. She dismisses the memories of her time in the future as merely a dreadful nightmare.
She reluctantly returns to two thousand and twenty-four with only snippets of memory restored.
When reading through her nineteen seventy-five diary, she is distressed to learn that her close friend, Olivia Dupont, had mysteriously disappeared and was feared murdered. Olivia had become an investigative journalist and was about to expose four prominent Australian companies. One of these companies was owned by Lucille's now deceased husband, Paul Wainwright. The diary further reveals that Olivia had tried to blackmail Lucille into giving false evidence at the coming Government Inquiry. The diary goes on to strongly imply that Lucille murdered Olivia and disposed of her body in a sinkhole in the National Park.
When the Herald prepared to move location, journalist Darcy Darnell finds Olivia's missing reports in the company's archives. Many will be desperate to get their hands on those papers, including Gabriel Tweedie, a small-time criminal who supplied Olivia with information involving members of the notorious Silver Chain mob who were dealing with the four companies.
Against advice, Darcy's colleague, Sebastian Casalini writes an article exposing the find. Now, both Sebastian and Darcy are in great danger. They have the papers and their enemies know it.
Further hypnosis unlocks Lucille's entire memory and she now knows what happened the day she met Olivia, the day Olivia disappeared.
