'Rajendra Mishra's Samay Ka Sanjal, first published in 2001, is a collection of Hindi poems written between 1961 and 1987, covering nearly three decades of the poet's formative years. Emerging from the experiences of a sensitive young man filled with dreams, energy, and idealism, the poems reflect his confrontation with personal disappointments and the social and moral failures of his time. For Mishra, poetry is not merely an expression of anguish or protest but a transformative force capable of reshaping human consciousness and society.
The collection is organized into three chronological sections-In Our Time (1961-71), Not in Our Time (1971-76), and The Present of Our Time (1976-87). Time serves as the central organizing principle of the volume, with the poems exploring its varied dimensions and its impact on human existence. Rather than offering straightforward narratives, the poems invite readers to engage intuitively with their emotional and philosophical depths.
A distinctive feature of the collection is its experimentation with language, form, and structure. Mishra views language and time as inseparable elements that create meaning through communication. Consequently, the poems range from short, compact pieces to expansive, prose-like compositions. Thematically, the poems move from personal reflections on body, spirit, and identity to broader concerns of society, politics, nature, and existence. As a pioneer of Aaj Kavita ("Poetry Today"), Mishra envisions poetry as an all-encompassing human process that connects inner and outer realities.
