"Ephraim, how did you make the highest score in this examination?"

He was the only Black student in the class. The question was never really about the exam.

Every time you brace before an encounter that hasn't happened yet - hands placed just so on the wheel, voice rehearsed before you've even opened your mouth - your body is paying a cost most people never see. Researchers call it weathering: the discovery that chronic racial vigilance ages the body faster than the calendar says it should. And for many, the wound doesn't stop at the surface - it gets in, a quiet verdict about your own worth, absorbed rather than simply endured.

The wound does not require a certificate of origin. It travels with the hierarchy wherever the hierarchy goes.

Neuroscientist and ordained elder Ephraim T. Gwebu has spent a career studying this wound - from his own published research among Black adults in Zimbabwe and Swaziland, to decades of academic and pastoral leadership across two continents. In these pages he brings together polyvagal theory, Ubuntu philosophy, the neuroscience of neuroplasticity, and the words of Christ to explain why your body remembers what your mind has tried to forget, how internalized racism and tribalism quietly shape beauty, ambition, and belonging, and what Jesus actually meant when He said His yoke was easy. Each of the book's twenty chapters closes with a practice you can actually keep - not a technique for managing the burden, but a step toward setting it down.

This is not a book to read once and shelve. It is a book to keep - underlined, returned to, practiced - until rest stops being something you reach for and becomes something you live in. Because the God who wept at Bethany, and who walked in the furnace before the three men entered it, has declared that what was done to the least of these was done to Him - and that He will repay. So rest, child of God. Not because the injustice is over. Because the ledger is in better hands than yours.

EPHRAIM T. GWEBU, PhD, is Professor Emeritus at Rusangu University, a neuroscientist, and an ordained elder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He is the author of The Comfortable Sin, Rewiring the Soul, Neuroplasticity, Ubuntu, and the Reform of African Pastoral Formation, Brain Science of Spiritual Transformation and The Unconverted Teacher. He lives in Harvest, Alabama.
