The series The Woodstock Tales follows two families of German descent in the village of Woodstock, Illinois, in the early 1900s. The fifth book in the series, Till Clouds Roll By in Woodstock, takes the Wienke and Doering families from 1916 to 1919 during the war years of World War I. During that time, German-American people in America were under the microscope just in case they were fraternizing with the enemy. The Wienkes were not, however, on the Doering side, the issue was not as clean-cut. Of more concern was a second battle being waged across the world: The Spanish Flu. By the end of 1919, the whole family in Woodstock had waged that second battle. If that wasn't enough, neutral America was in great turmoil. Everyday products ceased to come across the Atlantic from Germany. The national expectation was that each "real" American would give for the cause, which was carefully monitored by neighbors and officials. In addition, technology was spreading even to the small villages with both good and horrendous results. The whole family would not make it to the next decade.
