Trans-Atlantic Passages: Philip Hale on the Boston Symphony Orchestra 1889-1933 details the career of one of the greatest of American arts critics writing about one of the greatest of American orchestras during a time of great change. Born in Norwich, Vermont in 1854, Philip Hale grew up in Northampton, Massachusetts, practiced law and, after studying music abroad, became one of the most powerful and influential arts critics in America. During the forty-five years that he lived in Boston, Hale was music critic for a number of periodicals, including the Boston Home Journal (1889-91), Boston Post (1890-91), Boston Journal (1891-1903), and finally the Boston Herald (1903-33) where, from 1908, he doubled as drama critic. He also edited two music journals and provided anonymous critical entries for a third while serving in his greatest literary capacity, that of program essayist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1901-1933).
