Leon Trotsky led the October insurrection of 1917 and built the Red Army. Within twenty years his followers had founded a Fourth International that called on workers to defend the Soviet Union and take sides in the Second World War.

This study follows Trotsky's political path chapter by chapter: 1905, Zimmerwald and Brest-Litovsk; war communism, the NEP and Kronstadt; the struggle against Stalin; the Transitional Programme, entryism and the wars of the twentieth century. At each step it sets his positions against those of the communist left.

Its conclusion is uncompromising. Whatever its revolutionary language, Trotskyism became part of the political apparatus of capital.
