A fourteen-year-old girl, a body beneath a Baltimore bridge, and a case the city never fully resolved.

In November 1954, Carolyn Loretta Wasilewski was killed in Baltimore. Her body was discovered on railroad tracks beneath or near the Belvedere Avenue bridge, while reported bloodstains and personal belongings pointed investigators toward another possible scene. The murder produced memorable clues, competing theories, and an intensive investigation-but no publicly established offender.

Under Belvedere Avenue is an evidence-aware historical true crime account of the Carolyn Wasilewski cold case. It reconstructs the surviving public record without treating rumor as proof or uncertainty as permission to invent. The book follows Carolyn's final known movements, the separation between the apparent crime scene and the place where her body was found, witness reports, physical evidence, and the unresolved questions surrounding the word "Paul," reportedly written on her thigh.

The investigation also considers a possible retaliation theory connected to testimony Carolyn had given one week earlier, along with known-person, stranger, and opportunist theories. Each possibility is weighed against what the available record supports, what it only suggests, and what it cannot responsibly prove. Suspicion is not presented as guilt, and no theory is allowed to become a verdict.

Beyond the homicide investigation, the book examines mid-century Baltimore, Morrell Park, drape youth culture, and the adult assumptions that shaped how a murdered girl was described. It challenges the tendency to turn clothing, friends, reputation, or teenage rebellion into explanations for violence, keeping responsibility where it belongs while showing how social judgment can distort public understanding of a victim.

The case's long afterlife is part of the story. Newspaper framing, local legend, repeated clues, and later cultural retellings preserved Carolyn's name while sometimes reducing her to the tracks, the written name, or the "drape girl" label. By separating documented fact from allegation, inference, and mythology, the book asks how an unsolved murder becomes part of a city's memory-and what is lost when the legend becomes easier to repeat than the life at its center.

Written in a restrained, victim-centered investigative style, Under Belvedere Avenue is for readers of historical true crime, unresolved homicide cases, evidence-based cold case analysis, Baltimore history, and the ethics of public memory. It does not promise a solution the record cannot provide. It offers a careful account of what remains known, what remains disputed, and why Carolyn deserves to be remembered as more than the last clue.
