A monograph in archaeology and the history of science and technology, spanning from artifact research to technological reconstruction.
At the end of 2012, four loom models and related artifacts were unearthed from the Laoguanshan Western Han Dynasty cemetery in Chengdu. These loom models represent the only patterned loom (jacquard loom) models ever discovered in Chinese archaeology and are also the earliest physical evidence of jacquard looms found anywhere in the world. In 1995, the "Five Stars Rise in the East and Benefit China" brocade arm protector was unearthed from the Niya cemetery in Xinjiang. This discovery is considered one of the greatest textile archaeological finds of 20th-century China and represents the most technically challenging Han brocade known to date.
The "Han Looms for Han Brocade" project described in this book is based on research conducted on the loom models excavated from the Laoguanshan Han dynasty cemetery. Using the weaving techniques of this type of pattern-controlled, multi-heddle jacquard loom, the project successfully reproduced Han brocade artifacts, including the "Five Stars Brocade" arm protector, thereby fully reconstructing the Han dynasty jacquard loom and its pattern-weaving technical system.
