YOGA VASHISHTHA
THE SCIENCE OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND LIBERATION
A Modern Exploration of Advaita, Mind, Reality, and Self-Realization
This book is a structured scholarly rendition of the ancient philosophical masterpiece, the Yoga Vasistha, presented in a contemporary format while preserving its profound metaphysical essence. It unfolds as a complete journey of consciousness-from existential confusion to the highest realisation of non-duality.
The text begins with the awakening of dispassion in Prince Rama, who experiences deep existential dissatisfaction with worldly life. This initiates an inquiry into suffering, desire, fear, ego, and the cycles of mental bondage. The early chapters establish the foundation of vairagya (dispassion) and viveka (discrimination), essential for spiritual inquiry.
The second phase introduces the structure of the seeker's path, emphasising discipline, the role of the guru, and the interplay between self-effort and destiny. Karma is reinterpreted not as fatalistic determinism but as the dynamic functioning of consciousness shaped by intention and conditioning.
The third phase delves into the nature of mind, presenting it as the creative force that projects reality. Through analysis of imagination, memory, and ego, the text reveals that the sense of self is constructed rather than inherent. The world is shown to be a mental projection sustained by identification.
The fourth phase presents symbolic stories-Lila, Karkati, Bhusunda, and others-to illustrate metaphysical truths in narrative form. These stories explore parallel realities, immortality, transformation, and the illusion of time and identity.
The fifth phase establishes the non-dual philosophy of Advaita. It asserts that only consciousness is real, and all multiplicity is appearance within it. Concepts such as space, time, causation, and creation are reinterpreted as cognitive frameworks rather than absolute realities. The doctrine of Maya explains how misperception creates the illusion of separation.
The sixth phase brings philosophy into lived experience, describing the state of the jivanmukta-liberation while living. Here, action continues without attachment, relationships become transparent, and life is lived without egoic bondage.
The final phase dissolves all conceptual structures, pointing beyond philosophy into silence and direct awareness. Reality is revealed as unnameable, immediate, and self-evident consciousness.
Appendices expand the work with Sanskrit terminology, philosophical timelines, meditation practices, comparative studies, and contemplative exercises.
Ultimately, the book presents liberation not as attainment but as recognition of what has always been present: pure, non-dual awareness.
